This year I kicked off my UpCycle workshop! I had the opportunity to organize a workshop in a pop-up art space. The experience exceeded my expectations—participants approached the materials in thoughtful and unexpected ways, each creating a unique piece of art.

My goal is to share the joy of art and to show that creativity doesn’t have to be expensive or exclusive. I found it deeply rewarding to guide participants as they explored their ideas and created work they felt proud of. Through this experience, I realized that my larger aim is to demonstrate how accessible art-making can be, and that you don’t have to consider yourself an artist in order to create.

UpCycle Workshop Objective:

Participants will create a work of art using upcycled materials. Artists will be encouraged to use found items such as used packaging, recycling objects, and discarded items that would otherwise be thrown in the trash. They can use these items in any way they wish and incorporate supporting materials like glue and paint to create their piece. There are NO RULES for this workshop, it is designed to promote freedom of expression and to work with the materials in any way that inspires them.

Key Takeaways:

  • Literally anyone can be an artist no matter what people say

  • Art can be bad - it’s still art- and that is okay that things don’t turn out exactly the way we want, it doesn't have to be forced

  • Making art is a personal, one-of-a-kind experience. No one else can create things the way you do.

  • Art doesn’t come easily to everyone, and everyone’s journey looks different. Don’t measure yourself against professionals or let their work discourage you.

  • There is no right or wrong way!
